Since the UN introduced World Water Day back in 1993, the event has been recognized every year with a different theme topical to the water situation worldwide. This year marks the event’s 24th birthday and was centred on ‘Water and Jobs,’ urging us to consider how water is integral to our very livelihoods. While the connection is obvious for occupations like plumbers or fishers, the video below illustrates well how water is actually tied in to nearly every industry.
Here in Canada, we are very fortunate to have clean, safe water available right in our own homes. Many people take for granted the water we have to drink, clean with, and even use to flush our toilets. But the next time you turn on the tap, consider that there are many people throughout the world that do not enjoy such luxury. Saving water here at home is certainly good, but we should also consider how to help struggling people here and abroad as well.
